James Laughlin (1914 – 1997)
Welcome to PoetryPoetry’s interview (and reading) with the late, great poet, James Laughlin. Better known as the publisher of New Direction Books, James Laughlin has been responsible for making some of the great literature of the world available in English translations. He is also known to many as a correspondent, publisher and friend of many literary giants such as Ezra Pound, e.e. cummings, and William Carlos Williams. However, James Laughlin is also a wonderful poet in his own right as you can hear in the selections he reads as part of this very special reading/interview. This program was recorded at Mr. Laughlin’s country home with support from the New York State Council on the Arts not long before Mr. Laughlin’s death in 1997 at the age of 83.
